dconf-service

Hello everyone.
I use Ubuntu 16.04 on a computer with a dual-core AMD processor mounted more than eight years ago.
It will be about two weeks ago that when I start the computer it is appreciated that it is continuously accessing the hard drive and everything is very slow. Some days it behaves like this during the whole work session, others after a certain time, it is normalized. Without any open application System Monitor marks a utilization of 50-60% of CPU. With the top command you can see that dconf-service is continuously writing and Xorg and Compiz consume 10-15% of CPU usage. Today I started the computer at twelve and until three thirty has not regularized its behavior. During this time it has generated a log of more than 35 MiB. I attach the beginning and the end of syslog.
Any help is welcome.
Thank you.

Files for TF700T ubuntu install, please help! :-)

I am looking to improve my old Transformer Infinity Pad TF700T and I have found that you can upload:

tf700-rootfs-0.7.1.tar.lzma (667Mb) and boot_installer-0.7.1.1.zip (11 Mb)

To your tablet and boot through recovery to get Ubuntu 12.x on the tablet speeding it up.

Simple enough and I have seen several Videos that shows a succesfull update, but all the links to these files are stale.

So can anybody help find these files so that I can get my tablet fast again? :-)

User: Sherman
Platform: HP Compaq 6710b
Operating System: Ubuntu 17.10

I just installed postgresql 10 using add-apt and apt-get. When I start initdb it asks for a data directory. Where do you put your data directory? Do I really need to perform initdb?

Thank you;

Raid 1 -advice/help please

:) Hi and thanks in advance for anyone's input.

Firstly I hope this is in the correct part of the forum, so please excuse if not.

I am trying set up my system with Raid 1 in 16.04 - although I am no expert or indeed
have much knowledge on the subject, so please bear with me.

I have two (2) Hdd's of 500Gb each, with partitions on both drives.
Have downloaded #mdadm and installed it.

From the command line, when I go too create md0 which most guides and instructions
recommend to use, I get the following output:-

'/dev/ sda /dev/sdb is busy (this is shortened version of the output)

My questions are as follows:-
1) Do both Hdd's have to be empty to setup raid
2) Have I to use a 'Live' CD version to attempt the raid
3) There is raid in the Bios - do I have to do anything there - most say do raid via software

If any of the above makes sense to anyone and they could guide me in the right direction,
then it would be much appreciated.

As I said, I am no expert on Linux, but can do a few things at the command line which
hopefully may be of some use.

Thank you for taking the time to look at my problem, and thank your for any input forth coming.

Regards - Dee

Problem with boot manager

Hello.

I have installed Windows, after that I have installed Ubuntu. I logged in to Ubuntu, everything was ok. Then I logged in to Windows and after that Ubuntu boot manager was gone, I couldn't get into Ubuntu. In order to fix this, I clicked something stupid in Windows like "Solve problems with booting" which probably made the situation worse. I can't boot to Ubuntu, it automatically loads Windows. I can't even go to Bios because Windows is so stupid.

I created something like this with Ubuntu Boot-Repair. They told me to share it with you:

http://paste.ubuntu.com/p/HHrRvZ74Gk/

Are you able to tell me what I should do to fix this basing on this?

[ubuntu] pia cannot connect

ubuntu 116.04.4

My pia is connecting forever. I submitted a request to fix it. The reply was of no help at all. I could not get by the 'disconnect' after pressing the icon (orange, the disconnect button does not disconnect). Since this is a new installation, v78, I have not connected and have nothing to create a new vpn connection I am, basically, screwed.

My hope is that I can get some help here. I think I will also post this on the ubuntu forum just in case.
I have one log: https://pastebin.com/bfWuxUZD

I have been running with pia for years with no problem then, suddenly, the thing could not connect. I thought I would get some help from pia but, sofar, nothing useful.

Any thoughts on this one would be appreciated.

thank you.....................

Something eating up CPU time

This started about a week ago - something running in the background is sucking up CPU time, continually slowing the computer to at least a crawl, if not stopping everything on the screen from 30 seconds to a minute or more.

How do i find what the problem is and fix it?

[ubuntu] Installing Brother printer drivers in 16.04

$

I'm using Ubutu 16.04LTS. I have a new Brother MFC-J985DW. After some searching, phone calls and hair pulling, I got Brother to give me their link to the drivers. Here's the link to Brother's site: http://support.brother.com/g/s/id/li...rect=on#f00104.

Their instructions for installing the drivers hasn't worked. I can't find support in 16.04 for the 'superuser' Brother mentions, but tried to create a superuser with: "su -l". But after entering the password (and one different from my usual one), I got "authentification failure." I'm wary of going further with superuser, as I understand "sudo" should get me authority to make the changes, and I'd probably do some damage anyway.

Following Brother's instructions I get:

>ira@ira:~/Downloads$ sudo su gunzip linux-brprinter-installer-2.2.0-1.gz
>No passwd entry for user 'gunzip'

Trying without "su" I get:

>ira@ira:~/Downloads$ sudo gunzip linux-brprinter-installer-2.2.0-1.gz
>[sudo] password for ira:
>gzip: linux-brprinter-installer-2.2.0-1.gz: No such file or directory

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

[SOLVED] Weird - only some programs wont run

The weirdest thing is happening. When I boot the computer all seems fine. But only some programs will run.

I can run my text editor (Sublime Text)
I can run gimp

I can't run evince, or firefox, or whatever program is the default for looking at pictures.

I booted the computer via a usb with an old version of linux.

Then I unmounted my big harddrive (with the problems).
Then I ran
fsck -yvfM
which reported no errors

I have no idea what to try next. I hope I haven't been subject to some strange rootkit exploit.

My system is Linux Mint 18

customize gnome title bar drop down menu (not sure what that menu is called)

Changing my version of Python?

Im pretty new with linux, so i hope you guys bare with me.
So when i try to run this python program, i get a syntax error on line 403:
Code:

def get_data(self, (maxcol,maxrow)):
And im guessing that this syntax is illegal in 3.6, (my current version)
So im trying to figure a way where i can use 2.7 or an earlier version where the syntax above would be accepted.
Is it propper to change the symbolic link for "python" in my /usr/bin/ directory to use an earlier version then python3?

Thanks.

exFAT free space bitmap corruption

I'm wondering if anyone else is experiencing / suffering from repeated exFAT free space bitmap corruption?

Volumes are losing disk space, it's marked as being used even, if it's not allocated to files. Afaik, this is due to free space bitmap corruption. Running chkdsk on Windows does fix this issue. But is there any sane work way to deal with this when using Linux?

In case when the amount of lost disk space gets too ridiculous. Currently I fix the problem by just copying files from volume, formatting the drive / volume again and copying files back.

Does anyone know, if there are any plans to improve fsck.exfat / exfatfsck?

Hi,
I am using Ubuntu 10.04. I know it is too old, but I have to use this version for some reasons.
I want to update libpam version to 1.2.1. So I followed following tutorial from linuxfromscratch for update this lib. http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/blfs...linux-pam.html
After all, I can take root permission by using su. But when I try to run sudo, I get following error every time :
Sorry, try again.
Sorry, try again.
Sorry, try again.
sudo: 3 incorrect password attempts

And this is my /etc/pam.d/sudo file :
#%PAM-1.0

@include common-auth
@include common-account

session required pam_permit.so
session required pam_limits.so

Also here is /var/log/auth.log :
Mar 28 19:45:31 sarslan-laptop sudo: PAM (sudo) illegal module type: @include
Mar 28 19:45:31 sarslan-laptop sudo: PAM pam_parse: expecting return value; [...common-auth]
Mar 28 19:45:31 sarslan-laptop sudo: PAM (sudo) no module name supplied
Mar 28 19:45:31 sarslan-laptop sudo: PAM (sudo) illegal module type: @include
Mar 28 19:45:31 sarslan-laptop sudo: PAM pam_parse: expecting return value; [...common-account]
Mar 28 19:45:31 sarslan-laptop sudo: PAM (sudo) no module name supplied
Mar 28 19:45:31 sarslan-laptop sudo: sarslan : 3 incorrect password attempts ; TTY=pts/2 ; PWD=/etc/pam.d ; USER=root ; COMMAND=/bin/bash

Also ı add my user to root group. And this is not solved problem.

So I cant figure out what is my problem. Could you help me ?
Thanks and Best Regards

Hello,

I am attempting to install HaCi onto my ubuntu server and appear to be having issues. I followed the install guide from http://haci.larsux.de/wiki/HaCiInstall but it does not help. I am wondering if anyone here knows of or can guide me through setting this up. I have created the MYSQL database and installed apache2. Downloaded the HaCi package moved it to the proper directory and when i enter the command
Code:

sudo a2ensite haci.conf
it tells me bascially to reload apache, when i do it i get an error which after looking at the logs says that there is an error in my .conf file on line 9. i checked line 9
Code:

SetHandler    perl-script
i verified that perl is installed but do not know where to go from here.

Any help would be appreciated.

Simple scan multiple page issue - Canon mf244dw

Hello,

When scanning multiple pages from a Canon mf244dw via the LAN I only get the first page scanned, then an error message.

Running "simple-scan -d" and looking at the output I see the following:

Code:

[+123.87s] DEBUG: scanner.vala:1321: sane_read (7651) -> (SANE_STATUS_CANCELLED, 0)
[+123.87s] WARNING: scanner.vala:1337: Unable to read frame from device: Operation was cancelled
[+123.87s] DEBUG: scanner.vala:768: sane_cancel ()
[+123.87s] DEBUG: scanner.vala:771: sane_close ()

I do notice that the scanner is already feeding in the second page before the first page has completely rendered on screen - perhaps it's going too fast?

Thanks

network printer only appears when turned on

Hi,

I recently updated to Ubuntu 17.10.

I am using a Lexmark MS610dn network printer. But if I want to print something the printer only shows up (in Libreoffice, e.g....) when it is already turned on. This is annoying as the printer is on another floor.

With my old install, Ubuntu 16.04.3 the printer was always available to send documents to, even when it was turned off.

Anybody any ideas how to make the printer permanently available?

I ruined my mum's PC

Hello,

I tried to dual boot Ubuntu 16 LTS alongside Win 10 Pro but now Windows 10 won't work. When I try to load Win 10, it just goes to the blue repair screen. When I try to repair, it fails. When I try to restore an earlier version, it fails. So I tried to access my mum's important files via Ubuntu, but I get this message:

Error mounting /dev/sda2 at /media/ubuntu4dmin/DABE2832BE280999: Command-line `mount -t "ntfs" -o "uhelper=udisks2,nodev,nosuid,uid=1000,gid=100 0" "/dev/sda2" "/media/ubuntu4dmin/DABE2832BE280999"' exited with non-zero exit status 18: Failed to open ntfs attribute: No such file or directory
Failed to load $MFT: No such file or directory
Failed to mount '/dev/sda2': No such file or directory

How can I fix this? My mums files are the most important, not Windows 10. However, If I am able to get Win 10 and the files, that's better.

Open Source Inventory Web Based system that uses QR or Barcodes you would recommend

Hello,

I'm searching for a web based inventory system with the following requirements:

  1. Locally hosted Free or Open Source Inventory sysetms for our small office supplies.
  2. Web Based
  3. Has the ability for us to input and use either QR Codes or Barcodes.
  4. Ideally I think it would be useful to be able to scan a QR code from our phone and have the webpage open up so we can input the number of items we are removing from stock so our inventory will be updated.

Does anyone have an inventory system they would like to recommend?

Thank you.

[UbuntuGnome] unable to move cursor in grub (16.04)

For no obvious reason I find that I can not move around the grub on startup.

As the computer enters the grub stage on startup the usb keyboard light goes off. This means I can not access repair mode in the grub. The direction keys do not work. Probably the keyboard is not active. Once the boot routine goes beyond the grub options the keyboard comes on again.

uname -r
4.14.30-xanmod27

I want to fsck on my system partition from within repair mode of the grub.

How do I correct the keyboard failing just for during the grub phase of the boot.
